Madison and Yancey counties will receive a small part of $19 million that is earmarked for Western North Carolina out of the 2024 government appropriations bill that passed March 9th. Madison County will receive $1.5 million for public safety communication upgrades. Weaverville will receive $1 million to expand water treatment plant capacity and Yancey County will receive $100,000 for portable substance analyzers for law enforcement.
The major part of the government money, $7.75 million, will go to Haywood County for a Workforce and Industry Center to address unemployment where the paper plant shut down putting 1000 people out of work. And $5 million will go for a new sewage plant to replace the one operated by the former paper plant that is leaking and could threaten the Pigeon River.
Breakdown of funding:
$2.5 million for a new EMS facility in Clay County.
$80,000 for a water rescue boat for emergencies in Graham and Swain Counties.
$1 million for broadband expansion in Haywood County.
$5 million to renovate and upgrade the Workforce and Industry Center at Haywood Community College.
$1.5 million for public safety communication upgrades in Madison County.
$2.8 million for facility upgrades to St. Luke’s Hospital in Polk County.
$1.3 million for water infrastructure improvements for the Town of Rutherfordton.
$1.75 million for a new regional wastewater treatment plant in the Town of Canton.
$750,000 for water infrastructure improvements in the Town of Murphy.
$1 million to expand water treatment plant capacity in the Town of Weaverville.
$1 million for public safety communication upgrades in Transylvania County.
$100,000 for portable substance analyzers for law enforcement in Yancey County.
