Alton Gregory Hughes, loving husband, father, and friend, age 60, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 1st, 2024 at his home in Burnsville following a two-year battle with brain cancer. A native of north Florida, he was the second son of Glenda McCullers McDonald Hughes and the late Leon Nixon McDonald Jr., and the adopted son of Alfred Lloyd Hughes Jr. Greg was preceded in death by his biological father and a brother, Leon Hughes.
He is also survived by his loving wife, Mary Beth Buenaga Hughes; three children: Avery Stryder, Isabelle Grace, and Olivia Nicole Hughes; a sister, Sally McDonald; and three brothers: Tim Hughes, Jeremiah Hughes and Al Hughes (Lindsey). He is survived as well by several nieces and nephews. Greg also leaves behind some very special people who were really more like brothers to him: his Uncle Marty McDonald, childhood friend Frank Futch, and longtime dedicated friend, Nick Silver.
Greg received his Bachelor’s Degree from Florida State University and worked in construction management. He was a dedicated father to his family whom he loved fiercely, most especially his children, and will be greatly missed by those who loved him. Whether it was home on his mountain property outside of Burnsville, picnicking on the Blue Ridge Parkway, or vacationing at Disney World, he loved being with his family.
Growing up, Greg loved fishing on the Suwannee River and hunting. He loved music and a good quality cup of hot tea. He loved to laugh.
Greg loved the Lord. The last couple of years, Greg sought the Lord relentlessly. He had questions, and if we’re honest, we all do. But he trusted the Lord and had faith, and that’s what the Lord wants from us. To trust him in faith.
A memorial service and celebration of Greg’s life will be held at a later date and will be announced.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the nurses and staff at Hospice and Home Care of the Blue Ridge for their caring and skilled support in making Greg comfortable at home, and going above and beyond in supporting the family the last several weeks.
