(Yancey County Sheriff’s Office press release)
In recent days, the Yancey County Sheriff’s Office has become aware of a sophisticated scam targeting unsuspecting individuals. The letter looks official and appears legitimate, with the promise of monetary rewards. Upon closer examination, the letter reveals telltale signs of fraudulent activity, including poor grammar and suspicious requests ‘for your security deposit’. The letter also goes as far as having information that is not readily available, such as part of your social security number and knowing where you have a bank account.
Sheriff Shane Hilliard urges the public to exercise caution when receiving unsolicited messages or letters, especially those promising financial benefits. Legitimate organizations, such as the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), do not typically engage in such solicited communication, nor do they request sensitive personal information.
To avoid falling victim to scams of this nature, everyone should take the following precautions:
- Verify the Sender: Do not call the number they advise you to call, you will get the scammer, always call the public published number for that government agency.
- Pay Close Attention: Legitimate organizations maintain high standards of professionalism in any correspondence. Improper language and grammar usually point to a scam.
- Use Caution: Any communication promising financial rewards or requiring personal information should cause doubt. Contact the sender directly through verified channels to confirm the legitimacy of the communication.
- Report Suspicious Activity: If you believe you have received a fraudulent communication impersonating the FTC or any other government agency, report it to the appropriate authorities. Reporting suspicious activity can help protect others from falling victim to similar scams.
Yancey County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to combating fraudulent schemes and protecting citizens from deceptive practices. For additional information and resources on how to recognize and report a possible scam, visit the official FTC website at www.ftc.gov.
