Madison County Man Charged With Forgery

A press release from the North Carolina Department of Insurance said Whitley Danielson Owensby, age 28, of Mars Hill, had been charged with one count of common law forgery and one count of obtaining property by false pretense, both felonies. Owensby is accused of trying to deposit on December 24, 2021, a two-party check into his Bank of America Business Account in the amount of $40,296.19 without the consent of Debourg Logisitics, who was the second party named on the check. Freeman was released from custody under a $10,000 secured bond and ordered to appear in Madison County Courthouse on May 7.

“Insurance fraud hits consumers in the wallet,” North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey said in a press release, “Approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar goes to covering the cost of fraud. I’m fighting this by aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud in North Carolina.”
