Conner Birchfield Honored by Mitchell JCPC for His Service

Graduating MHS Senior Conner Birchfield, center, was presented with honor cords to wear with his cap and gown by Mitchell County Schools Resource Officer Justin Biddix, left, and Juvenile Justice Chief Court Counselor John Troy Autry, right. All three are voting members of the Mitchell JCPC. The cord recognizes Birchfield’s service to his local JCPC while a student at Mitchell High School.

The Division of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention of the North Carolina Department of Public Safety partners with Juvenile Crime Prevention Councils in each county to bring community leaders together, locally and statewide, to try to reduce and prevent juvenile crime. JCPC members are appointed by the Mitchell County Board of Commissioners and meet monthly. The meetings are open to the public, and all business is considered public information.

Voting members of the Mitchell JCPC like Birchfield are volunteers who help make decisions about how to locally allocate state funding that is matched by the county. State funds locally allocated are slightly over $84,000 with a 20% match provided by the county. For information about your local JCPC contact Secretary Lori Gilcrist at lori.gilcrist@gmail.com
