The Classic Movie Club is showing classic films monthly at the Yancey County Public Library. Showtime is 7 p.m. on Monday, June 10, for The Third Man, considered one of the greatest films of all time for its acting, atmospheric cinematography, and musical score.
Everyone is welcome to attend. There is no charge for admission but donations will be accepted for popcorn and drinks. The evening begins with Chapter 3 of the 1941 science fiction serial The Adventures of Captain Marvel.
The Third Man is a 1949 film noir directed by Carol Reed, written by Graham Greene, and starring Joseph Cotten, Alida Valli, Orson Welles and Trevor Howard, set in post-war Vienna. The film centers on American Holly Martins (Cotten) who arrives in the city to accept a job with his friend Harry Lime (Welles), only to learn that Lime has died. Martins decides to stay in Vienna and investigate his death.
The atmospheric use of black-and-white expressionist cinematography by Robert Krasker, harsh lighting, and subtle “Dutch angle” camera technique are major features of The Third Man, along with the theme music by Anton Karas, bombed-out locations, and acclaimed performances from the cast. The style evokes the atmosphere of an exhausted, cynical, post-war Vienna at the start of the Cold War.
Classic movies are usually shown on the first Monday of each month unless the library meeting room is booked or the date is near a holiday. In that case, an alternate date will be announced for that particular month as it is for June.
The library is located on School Circle. For more information, contact Bob Wilson at 828-682-2609 or email neldabobwilson@gmail.com.
