Estel Higgins, age 92 of Burnsville, NC, went Home to be with the Lord at the Charles George Veterans Affairs Medical Center on June 9, 2024.
Estel was born in Burnsville on August 22, 1931, to the late Hiram and Lizzie Silvers Higgins. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, William Brooks Higgins; sisters: Velda Weber, Viola Edwards, Lola Mae Rice, Sarah Coleen Edwards, and Ruby Reese; half-brother, Elbert Higgins; half-sister, Ethel Higgins; and son-in-law, Johnny Thacker.
Estel and his loving wife, Doris, were married for 71 wonderful years. He served in the Air Force and was one of the last few remaining graduates of the Class of 1950 of Bee Log High School in Yancey County. He will be fondly remembered.
Left behind to cherish his memory is his wife, Doris Higgins; son, Gregg Higgins; daughters: Deborah Higgins of Greeneville, TN, Rita Thacker of Burnsville, NC; and Tami (Edwin) Fortner of Burnsville, NC; sister, Linda Waldrep of Weaverville, NC; grandchildren: Karena Thacker (Evan Wells), Price Fortner, and Paige Fortner; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home in Burnsville from 1:00 -2:30 p.m. A graveside service will follow the visitation at the McCracken Cemetery in Burnsville, NC. Reverend Keith Miller will be officiating.
The family is requesting privacy in this time of mourning and will not be accepting visitors or any plates of food at the family home but would like to say thank you for your understanding and prayers. They would also like to thank the Hospice staff at the VA Medical Center for their wonderful care of Estel in his last days.
