Classic Movie Club Showing Musical Singin’ in the Rain July 8

The Classic Movie Club is showing films monthly at the Yancey County Public Library. Showtime is 7 p.m. on Monday, July 8, for Singin’ in the Rain, the 1952 musical that is regarded as one of the greatest films ever made.

Everyone is welcome to attend. There is no charge for admission but donations will be accepted for popcorn and drinks. The evening begins with Chapter 3 of the 1941 science fiction serial The Adventures of Captain Marvel.

With a perfectly balanced mixture of singing, dancing, comedy, and romance, it’s easy to see why Singin’ in the Rain is now widely regarded as the greatest film musical ever made. The energetic, creative dancing by Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, and Debbie Reynolds, who was only 19 when the movie was made 72 years ago.

The story line: When the transition is being made from silent films to “talkies,” everyone has trouble adapting. Don and Lina have been cast repeatedly as a romantic couple, but when their latest film is remade into a musical, only Don has the voice for the new singing part. After a lot of practice with a diction coach, Lina still sounds terrible, and Kathy, a bright young aspiring actress, is hired to record over her voice.

Classic movies are usually shown on the first Monday of each month unless the library meeting room is booked or the date is near a holiday. In that case, an alternate date will be announced for that particular month as it is for July.

The library is located on School Circle. For more information, contact Bob Wilson at 828-682-2609 or email neldabobdwilson@gmail.com or call the library at 682-2600.
