The new Mitchell Elementary/Mitchell Middle school opens in August. With the opening of the combined school, it leaves several unoccupied former school buildings. A community meeting has been set to update local residents about the vacant Deyton Elementary and Harris Middle School buildings. The meeting will take place on Thursday, July 11th at 6:00pm in the Harris Middle School Auditorium. Plans were recently announced for the vacated Bowman Middle School building to be repurposed as a multi-purpose hub for county services and community activities. The plan includes using the space for the Mitchell County Agriculture Extension, board of elections and other county services. Plans are also for it to be a place for cultural activities including a 300 seat auditorium, gymnasium, commercial kitchen, farmer’s market and possibly a childcare center. The football field can be used for multiple purposes including livestock activities, gardening and rec league sports.
