Craig Douglas Martin went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 3, 2024. He went to his rest peacefully while at home comforted by his wife and two sons.
Craig was born in Rochester, NY on June 17, 1943 to Vaughan Foster Martin and Alvera (Barber) Martin. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother David Foster Martin, and infant daughter Deanna Janine.
Craig was a business owner, living out his dream to be his own boss by establishing and operating New to You Furniture in Burnsville, NC for parts of five decades, most recently from 1993-2022. Finding quality, affordable furniture for his customers and sharing his knowledge of the history and workmanship in the chosen pieces was a particular passion. He liked telling stories of his “finds” which sometimes led to tales of hair-raising experiences but certainly resulted in rich relationships. Also a sporting enthusiast, he enjoyed the fruit of his labor by motorcycling, boating, fishing, and other outdoor recreation. He had a number of personal interests which included classic cars, antiques and collectibles, music, sports, and playing with his beloved dogs. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Burnsville where he sang in the choir.
Craig was strong, smart, and courageous. In his own quiet way, he was a rock-solid supporter of his family and personified a hard-work ethic in all he did. He lived a colorful and interesting life.
Surviving is his wife of 59 years, Jeanne (Hahn) Martin of Burnsville, NC, sons Cary Vaughan Martin (wife Penny) of Mooresville, NC and Colby Grant Martin (wife Jenny) of Burnsville, NC, sister, Jane Martin Briel of Lake Mary, FL, three grandchildren (Lauren Megan, Emerson, and Juliet), two great-grandchildren (Waylon and Beau), and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family is planning a memorial service at a later date.
The family is extremely thankful for the many kindnesses and extraordinary care extended by Compassionate Care of Yancey County and Julie McCurry. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Craig would be appreciated at Compassionate Care WNC at 856 Georges Fork Road, Burnsville, NC 28714
