Yancey Commissioners Meeting

The Yancey County Courtroom was filled to capacity Monday evening for the regular monthly meeting of the Yancey County Commissioners. The large crowd was a response to the special called meeting on June 28th, where the Commissioners announced plans to withdraw from the Avery, Mitchell, Yancey Regional Library System in July of 2025.

The library issue was not on the agenda for last night’s regular meeting. According to the Commissioners’ public comment rules, three speakers are allowed three minutes per subject. During the public comments, three Yancey residents voiced their opposition to the library withdrawal, citing concerns about reduced grant money and funding if the county is no longer part of the Regional Library.

During the meeting, Yancey County Tax Administrator Danny McIntosh reported that the County Tax office has processed over 400 property tax appeals and has approximately 500 more to go. In the public comments, one citizen proposed extending the 2% discount for early property tax payments until the end of the year.

There was also public comment about managing the large number of short-term rentals in the county.
