Competition for State License to Add 26 Hospital Beds

Three major hospitals—Mission Hospital (HCA-owned), AdventHealth, and Novant Health—are competing for a state license to add 26 beds to expand local healthcare services in WNC. Each hospital has submitted detailed applications to convince state officials that their proposal is best.
The state’s Certificate of Need determination includes Buncombe, Graham, Madison, and Yancey Counties. However, all three hospitals aim to build or expand in Buncombe County, which has the largest population.
Novant Health plans to build a $249 million cancer treatment hospital on Long Shoals Road. Regardless of state approval, they will construct a medical office building with an infusion clinic, chemotherapy pharmacy, and oncology-trained pharmacist.
Mission Hospital proposes a $1.6 million expansion to add 26 beds within its current Asheville buildings. They have high bed utilization and often cannot accept all patient transfers. The hospital has faced public concerns about patient safety and medication.
AdventHealth seeks to expand its planned Weaverville hospital, which already has a license for 67 beds, by adding 26 more beds.
State Senator Julie Mayfield, representing Buncombe County, supports increasing competition and improving patient care at Mission Hospital. She believes the state should foster this competition.
All three hospitals agree that the growing and aging population justifies the need for more hospital beds.
