Mitchell County Historical Society Program Features Joara Foundation and Fort San Juan

The Mitchell County Historical Society is pleased to announce its August program, featuring Mike Carpenter, a staff member of the Warren Wilson College Field School representing the Joara Foundation. The Exploring Joara Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to educating and engaging the public through hands-on archaeology and history programs, events, and opportunities to discover our diverse cultural and historical past.

Mike’s presentation will focus on the work at the Joara or Berry Site, located near Morganton, NC. This site is the location of the native town of Joara, which was occupied between 1400-1600 CE, and is also the site of Fort San Juan, the first European settlement in the interior of the United States.

The program will be held on August 6th at 7 pm at the Mitchell County Senior Center in Ledger, NC. Join us for an exciting and insightful event, featuring hands-on examination of artifacts.
