Earl Johnson Rathburn, age 94 of Burnsville, passed away at Smoky Ridge Health & Rehab on Saturday, July 20, 2024.
He was born on September 18, 1929, at the family farm in Indian Creek, to the late Samuel Alexander Rathburn and Vernie Lee Maney.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings: Glenn (Elizabeth) Rathburn, Mildred Rathburn, Ruth (Clayton) Ballard, Grace (Lawrence) Hylemon, Burl Rathburn, Wilma June (Charles) Waldrup, and Margaret (Tom) Ray.
Earl moved to Detroit at a young age. While there, he worked for Chrysler, and later enjoyed his days on the road as a truck driver. Earl was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served in the Paratroopers Division.
In June of 1952, he married Bertha Cischke, and began his lifelong career as a carpenter and woodworker. Later, Earl enjoyed many years in Texas before returning home to Burnsville for his remaining years.
Earl loved being outdoors. He loved to hunt and fish; but his true passion was devoted to his guns. He especially loved his muzzleloaders; he enjoyed both collecting, custom building, and competing. Earl was very proud of his shooting record and his collection of medals he had accumulated over the years.
He is survived by his children: Terrie (Steve) Knowlton, Danny Rathburn, Mark Rathburn, Nancy (Steve) Wolforth; as well as six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several very dear nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, we would like to recognize the kind and loving care Earl received from the staff at Compassionate Care Western North Carolina. Donations may be made to their facility at 856 Georges Fork Road in Burnsville, NC, 28714.
