Community Mourns Loss of Former Police Officer


Hundreds of people gathered around the Burnsville town square Monday evening, mourning the loss of a former Burnsville Town policeman and recently retired Marshall Chief of Police Mike Boone.
Officers from Yancey, Madison and Buncombe Counties formed a long funeral procession that Started in Winston Salem and went around the Burnsville town Square and on to Yancey Funeral Home, west of Burnsville.
Hours earlier the identity of the man who crashed head on, into Boone’s truck Friday evening, on Interstate 26 was confirmed.
Ryan Ricky Houston had been on the run from authorities across multiple counties since Thursday. He was driving a stolen 2019 Jaguar Friday evening when he slammed into Boone’s truck, causing a fiery crash. Earlier in the afternoon McDowell County Sherriff’s Department confirmed the death of 41-year-old, mother of two, Malerie Crisp, as the passenger who was in the vehicle with Ryan Houston that crashed on Interstate 40 on Thursday, August 1st in a related incident. McDowell authorities reported that Crisp had been stabbed to death before the crash.
