Yancey Woman Wins $200,000 Jackpot

A woman from Yancey County recently hit the jackpot with a $5 scratch-off ticket, according to the North Carolina Education Lottery. Norma Shepherd of Burnsville won the $200,000 top prize on a Triple Red 777 ticket she purchased from Mountain Energy (Shell) at U.S. 19 East Bypass in Burnsville. The release said Shepherd arrived at lottery headquarters Tuesday in Raleigh to claim her prize. After required federal and state tax withholdings, she took home $149,001. The Triple Red 777’s game debuted in July with five $200,000 top prizes, the release said. Three $200,000 prizes remain to be claimed.

Yancey County has received $30 million in state grants funded by the lottery to help with school construction needs.
