Homer J. Harding

Homer J. Harding, age 97, of Duck Branch Road in Bakersville, passed away Thursday, August 8, 2024 at the Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine.

Born on September 30, 1926 in Yancey County, he was the son of the late Hughie and Maggie Jones Harding. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Greene Harding who passed away in 2017.

Also preceding him in death were his sisters; Georgia Dale and Emma Grace McPeters and his brothers; Charlie and Ted Harding and his son-in-law; Bill McKinney.

Homer was the oldest living World War II veteran in Mitchell County at the time of his death. He faithfully served his country in the U.S. Navy and was in the South Pacific during war time in World War II. He was also the chauffeur for President Harry Truman.

Homer was a member of the Pleasant Gap Baptist Church. He was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. He was a family man and enjoyed gardening and animals.

Left to cherish his memory is his son; David Harding of Burnsville; his daughter; Sherri McKinney and husband, Mark of Bakersville his brothers; Wade Harding and wife, Wanda and JC Harding and wife, Eloise all of Burnsville; his sister; Shirley Mae Wilson of Micaville; five grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

A time to support the family, share memories and receive friends will be on Monday, August 12, 2024 from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm in the Chapel of Webb Funeral Home.  The funeral service will be Monday, August 12, 2024 at 3:00 pm in the Chapel of Webb Funeral Home with the Rev. Vern Grindstaff officiating. Burial will be in the Grindstaff Cemetery in Bakersville.

The family would like to extend a special ‘Thank You’ to the staff at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital and Compassionate Care of Western North Caroline for their care of Homer. The family would also like to say ‘Thank You’ to the volunteers at the Mitchell Senior Center and Meals on Wheels.
