At the Yancey County Commissioners Monday night regular meeting they moved forward with their plans to change the library system from a 3-county regional system to a locally controlled single county system. In preparation for the July 2025 transition, they appointed 3 county commissioners, Stacey McEntyre Green, Mark Ledford, and Sandi Norton, to the library advisory board. Prior to the commissioners meeting a group of people walked from the Yancey Public Library to the courthouse to express appreciation of the library and their desire for it to remain in the regional system.
In other business commissioners heard an update from Misty Randolph on the services and progress at the Yancey County Health Department and provided a support letter to WAMY for a USDA Housing Preservation grant. Lucy Wilson gave a report on Camp Funshine, thanked the county for donating the Toe River Campground for the camp again this year and honored Commissioner Jeff Whitson with a Sunshine Hero award. Commissioners conveyed the land at South Toe Elementary to the South Toe Volunteer Fire Department, allowing them to be able to apply for grants.
Nine speakers spoke on varying topics with several in opposition to the library changes. Others complained about the property tax reevaluation and lack of transparency.
