Construction To Begin at Ray Cort Park

On August 16, 2024, Yancey County received bids on the Ray Cort Project. This is the last and final phase of the renovation project, which will include the construction of a new building and parking lot reconfiguration.
Yancey County received a Parks and Recreation Trust Fund grant in 2023 and has been in the planning and design process ever since. This new facility will replace the “Old Red Brick Building” that is currently on site. The current building has served the public well in many ways over its useful life. It was used as a County Health Department in the 60s, and housed offices for Parks and Recreation, Yancey County Transportation, Guardian ad Litem, and much more.
The new facility will include office space for Parks and Recreation, meeting space, an indoor/outdoor exercise area, storage space, and much-needed bathrooms for park visitors.
“The Yancey County Commissioners are looking forward to finishing the Ray Cort Park renovation project and creating a more usable space for our citizens and visitors alike. This building should provide space for multiple generations to enjoy for years to come. It’s exciting to see the new opportunities that a new facility can bring to our community,” said County Manager Lynn Austin.
Commissioners will review the bids and award the contract to the lowest responsible bidder in the near future, with construction expected to begin shortly after.
