Burl Pitman

Burl Pitman, age 88, of Jacks Creek, passed away on Tuesday, August 27th, 2024 at his home.  A native of Mitchell County, he was a son of the late Waites and Minnie Penley Pitman.  He was preceded in death as well by six siblings:  Jack Pitman (Nell), Ray Pitman, Glenn Pitman, Elma Pitman, Louise Penley (Orville) and Edna Burleson (Hobert).

Burl was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Spruce Pine, which he loved dearly.  His working career was spent at Ellen’s Knitting Mill, later known as Hampshire Hosiery, for a span of 40 years.  Upon retiring, he began doing what he loved the most… farming their land.  Many hours were spent working on their property and he enjoyed every moment.  Burl was such a fun person to be around, and everyone who ever spent any time at all with him really loved him.  Nothing in life was dearer to him than his wife, his grandchildren and, most of all, his son, Gaylon.  He will forever be remembered for his kindness, his infectious smile, and his larger-than-life personality.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 52 years, Nancy Silvers Pitman; son, Gaylon Pitman of Jacks Creek; three grandchildren:  Anika Pitman (Dmitriy Antetskiy), Lexie Pitman and Dakota Pitman; and his sister, Cathy Jones of Weaverville. Several nieces, nephews and other extended family survive him as well.

Per Burl’s wishes, he will be cremated and buried in the Honeycutt Cemetery on Coxes Creek.

The family would like to thank the staff of Compassionate Care WNC for the loving and attentive care shown to Burl and their family, and request that memorial donations be made to them at 856 Georges Fork Road, Burnsville, NC  28714.  A memorial tree may also be purchased in his memory through our website and online condolences may be made there as well at www.yanceyfuneralservice.com.
