Mary Sue Benfield Garland

Mary Sue Benfield Garland age 95, of Spruce Pine in the Ingalls community passed away Wednesday September 4, 2024, at her home. Born March 23, 1929, in Avery County, she was a daughter of the late Harold and Zoda Carpenter Benfield. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband James Monroe Garland, brothers, Paul, Doyle, and infant twins Dewey and Lewis Benfield, sister Sandra Benfield Buchanan and a son in law, Tommy K. Daniels.

Mary Sue was a member of Pine Grove United Methodist Church; she was a graduate of Crossnore High School and worked in the cafeteria of Riverside Elementary School. She was a very active volunteer in the church and the Green Valley community, She enjoyed crocheting and loved to travel having visited 49 of the 50 states in the US. Mary Sue never met a stranger.

Left to cherish her memories are her children, Jack R. Garland (Carolyn) of Crossnore, his twin sister, Jean Garland Daniels of Newland, Jimmy D. Garland (Alma) of Spruce Pine, Lee Garland (Glenda) of Spruce Pine and Leona Garland McFee (Kennie) of Newland, sister, Katherine Baker of Morganton, twelve grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Services for Mrs. Garland will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday September 7, 2024, at the Pine Grove United Methodist Church with the Revs. Brent Nidiffer and John Duvall officiating. The family will receive friends Friday September 6, 2024, from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine. Burial will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be her six grandsons.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Blue Ridge 136 Hospital Drive, Spruce Pine, NC 28777, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at www.stjude.org or to the Pine Grove Cemetery Fund 53 Pine Grove Road Spruce Pine, NC 28777.
