Helen Lee McPeters Austin, age 90, of the Cane River Community, passed away on Sunday, October 27, 2024 at Madison Health and Rehabilitation Center. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Wilburn and Rose Lee Shepherd McPeters. As well as her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ned Austin; her first husband, Garrett Pittman; brothers: Wilburn McPeters, Jr., Clifford McPeters, and Johnny McPeters; and sister, Alice Elkins.
Helen loved attending her church, Indian Creek Baptist Church. She enjoyed cooking and helping everyone that she could. She was a loving wife to her husband, and also loved her faithful companion, Snoopy.
She is survived by sisters: JoAnn Goforth (Haven) of Asheville and Mary Will Garland of Burnsville. Several other nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family members also survive.
A Memorial Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 30th at Indian Creek Baptist Church. Pastor Charlie Foster will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 until 6:30 p.m. prior to the services at the church.
