Joann Sullins

On October 30th, 2024, Joann Sullins left this world in the same way she lived: peacefully and surrounded by loved ones.

Joann is survived by her four children: Richard (Ann), Gerald (Michelle), Beverly (James), and Nan; stepsons Ray Lee (Karon) and Warren; and daughter-in-law Peggy. She was blessed to watch her family multiply and leaves behind twenty-seven grandchildren, forty-one great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her sister, Jackie Thomas, and brother, Jim Gouge.

Greeting her in Heaven was her loving husband of fifty-nine years, Jack, her brothers, George and Bill Gouge, sister, Joyce Ellis, stepson, Ken, and granddaughter, Diane Sullins.

Joann was an active member of Pine Branch Baptist Church for sixty-two years, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and Bible School, and cherished her mornings with her beloved Sunday School class.

Upon retirement from the school system, Joann poured her passion for plants into her work at Lakeview Nursery. Her heart for service was further reflected in her time as a poll worker.

Joann’s true calling was nurturing others, especially through the simple yet profound act of feeding children — whether her own kids, grandchildren, or the thousands of young people who walked through the doors of the Harris and Mitchell High School cafeteria during her thirty-three years of service. As an extension of her impact, memorial donations can be made to Pine Branch Baptist Church to support the Shining Light Ministry, a program ensuring Mitchell County school children have access to food on the weekends — a cause close to Joann’s heart.

More than anything, Jo reveled in the joy of family. Her happiest moments were those spent together, creating memories that will echo through generations. Her legacy of love and kindness will continue to shine in the hearts of everyone who was fortunate enough to be loved by her.

The family will receive friends on November 24th, 2024 from 2-4 PM in the Pine Branch Baptist Church sanctuary with the funeral to follow with Rev. Bruce Cannon officiating. Interment will be in the Pine Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.
