With the 2024-25 wrestling season barely a week old, the Lady Mountaineer Grapplers wasted no time hitting the mats in pre-season competition. Six lady Mountaineers traveled to Greensboro College to compete in the1st Annual Joan Fulp Nationals, hosted by Greensboro College and the Sgt. S. Matthew Baynard Foundation. The early results showed a young squad with strong potential for the upcoming season.
Three senior ladies will lead the Mountaineers this season including Joslynn Cook, Madison Morales, and Zoe Hippe. All three performed well, with Cook finishing 2nd, while Morales and Hippe finished 3rd in their respective divisions.
The younger Lady Mountaineers also showed a strong will to win, with 10th grader Kierra McCall notching her first ever career win over Isabella Mcdaniel of Swain Co. en route be being crowned tournament champion in the 14U 123lb division and also securing 3rd place in the Junior 125. Junior Payton Buchanan and freshman Katie Stowe also finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.
The Lady Mountaineers topped all teams in the unofficial team scoring. They will look to build on the success next weekend as they kick off the official season in the Swain Invitational Tournament. Mitchell’s men will get underway November 19th in a tri-meet at Ashe County with Ashe and Allegheny.
