Richard Clarence Byrd, age 79, of Riverside, passed away on Monday, November 11th, 2024 at his home surrounded by his loving family. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Clarence and Clara Boone Byrd. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife, Glenda Cooper Byrd who passed away on February 17th, 2019; brother, Billy Byrd; sister, Judy Buchanan and nephew, Chris Whitson.
Richard loved more than anything working with his backhoe, gardening and also enjoyed hunting.
Surviving is his daughter, Karen McDowell of Riverside; son, Darrin Byrd and wife, Jane, of Pensacola; granddaughter, Casey Fox and husband, Adam, of South Toe; step-grandson, Kelly Carroll and wife, Shelly, of Pensacola; great-granddaughters: Huntley and Hartlyn Fox; step, great-grandsons: Payce and Caden Carroll; brother, Mike Byrd and wife, Lynn, of Micaville; sister-in-law, Jean Campbell and husband, Roger, of Micaville; special nephew, Jeff Whitson and wife, Lisa, of Riverside and his fur babies, Sophie and Miss Kitty. Also surviving are special friends: Jim, Kenneth, Ralph and Scrub as well as several other extended family members.
The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. on Friday, November 15th at Yancey Funeral Services. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. following the visitation at the funeral home with Rev. Billy Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow in the Frank Cooper Family Cemetery.
