Robert Lee ‘Bobby’ McKinney, age 77, of Cane Creek Road in Bakersville, passed away Wednesday, December 4, 2024 at his home.
Born on May 6, 1947 in Mitchell County, he was the son of the late Jack and Billie June Greene McKinney.
Bobby was a member of the Roan Mountain Baptist Church. He was the former owner of B & J Auto in Bakersville. He began a long and storied career in Drag Racing in the ‘60’s. Throughout his career, drag racing brought him many great friends. In his spare time, he also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife of fifty-one years; Ginger Young McKinney; his daughter; Erica M. Ellis and husband, Dylan of Bakersville; his grandchildren; Zoey and Sawyer; Chad Young and wife Melanie and their children; Adam and Sarah and Col. Don Vinson; and his wife, Nancy and their daughter, Marla whom he considered as brothers.
A memorial service will be on Saturday, December 7, 2024 at 4:00 pm at Roan Mountain Baptist Church with Rev. Russell McKinney officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm at the church.
The family would like to extend a ‘Special Thank You’ to Brittany and Brandon and the staff of Hospice and Palliative Care of the Blue Ridge for their wonderful care of Bobby.
