Mary Sue Staton Gouge, age 90, formerly of Sweet Creek Road in Bakersville, went home to heaven on Wednesday, December 25, 2024, the day we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ our Savior, while a patient at UNC Blue Ridge; formerly Grace Hospital, in Morganton.
Born on September 4, 1934 in Mitchell County, she was the daughter of the late Marshal Taylor and Dessie Pitman Staton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Claude M. Gouge who passed away in 2015. Also preceding her in death was a brother, Jack Edward Staton.
Mary Sue was a member and former Children’s Sunday School teacher at Cub Creek Baptist Church. She so deeply loved her family and being a homemaker. She especially enjoyed cooking for family and friends and was known by family and in the community as one of the best cooks ever. She also enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, preserving food, and sewing. Mary Sue was a self-taught, excellent seamstress. She made many clothes for herself and her daughters. She took great pride in her home and loved to decorate. Sue enjoyed reading, especially her Bible and Sunday School Lessons. In addition to being a homemaker, Mary Sue retired from Bassett-Walker in Bakersville, NC. After retirement she enjoyed working part-time for the Mitchell County Senior Center and traveling with her husband and friends. In her later years she immensely enjoyed her crossword puzzles and being entertained by her grand dogs.
Left to cherish her memories are her daughters; Janet Johns and husband, Jeffrey of Morganton, Sandra Ayers and husband, Keith of Bakersville and Carol Boston of Spruce Pine, her sister; Emma Lee Buchanan of Bakersville, her grandchildren; Colby Boston and wife, Emily, Shane Boston and Kevin Hall, her great grandchildren; Ryan and James Boston, and several nieces and nephews. Our mother loved life and the people in her life. She wanted to be remembered this way and as a person who was grateful for each moment.
A time to support the family, share memories, and receive friends will be on Thursday, January 2, 2025 from 1:00 until 2:00 pm, at Cub Creek Baptist Church with the memorial service to also follow at 2:00 p.m. at Cub Creek Baptist Church, Bakersville, NC.
