On September 27, 2024, what was meant to be a day of celebration and recognition for retiring Mitchell County Clerk of Court, Janet Cook, turned into a battle for survival. The anticipated retirement party and accolades were overshadowed as Hurricane Helene, the storm of the century, unleashed its fury on Mitchell County, forcing residents to fight to protect their lives, homes, and community.
Janet Cook’s extraordinary career has been a cornerstone of the Mitchell County courthouse for over three decades. Janet began her journey in 1992 and, through her dedication and hard work, became Clerk of Court in 2006. Her unwavering commitment to justice, fairness, and service has touched countless lives and strengthened the community. Her legacy is one of integrity and leadership. Mitchell County and the Town of Spruce Pine are deeply grateful for Janet’s remarkable contributions and wish her a joyful and fulfilling retirement. She plans on enjoying retirement with her Husband Phillip and spending time with their four grandchildren.
