Roger Lee Jones

Roger Lee Jones, also known as “Flying Saucer”, age 72 of the Banks Creek Community, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, January 7, 2024, after a long battle with Parkinsons. Roger was the son of the late Gaither and Julia Fox Jones.

Roger drove a truck for most of his life where he went by the handle “Flying Saucer”. He traveled to 46 of the 48 states in the continental U.S., as well as Canada and Mexico. Considering he could not read nor write, this was amazing. If you gave him an address, he would get there and would never get lost. If he wasn’t driving a truck, he was running heavy equipment. He had a hand in most of the roads and businesses in Yancey and the surrounding areas. He sometimes said he was leaving his mark behind.

Besides his parents, Roger was preceded in death by brothers Bobby Jones and Verlin Jones, and nephew Daryl Jones.

Left behind to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 52 years Ronna Whitson Jones who never left his side and cared for him until his passing. Daughter Miranda Jones Barrier and her husband Sam of Jonas Ridge, NC. Grandson, Cody Barrier, who was his papaws pride and joy of Jonas Ridge. Sisters Mildred Deal and Shirley Yelton of Burnsville and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2025, in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home in Burnsville, NC. The family will receive friends and loved ones two hours prior to the service for visitation. Interment will follow the service in the Delaney Cemetery off Shoal Creek Road in Burnsville, NC. Reverend Blair Harvey will be officiating.

Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home is respectfully serving the Jones family.
