Howard Ray Johnson

Howard Ray Johnson, age 84, of the Elk Park Community, passed away suddenly on the evening of Wednesday, January 15th, 2025.  Ray was born on January 23rd, 1940 on Vale Road in Newland, NC to the late Howard and Almedia Brown Johnson. He was preceded in death by his son, Steven Howard “Scooter” Johnson and wife, Johnnie Wingfield; sisters: Dicie Ledford and Virgie Odom; brothers: Danny, Jay, Paul and Tommy Johnson; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Paul and Ruby Norman; sisters-in-law, Joyce Barrier, Dorothy Carpenter and Robin Norman and brothers-in-law: Joe Ledford, Sammy Vance and Amos Carpenter.  Ray was an active member of Belview Baptist Church,  He was a retired drywall hanger.  He loved to golf, fish, traveling, attending church functions.  He also enjoyed sports, especially Duke, the Redskins or and the Dodgers and anything his grandchildren participated in.  He was Mercedes, Nicholas and Haley’s number one fan.

Surviving is his loving wife of 50 years , Linda “Penny” Johnson of Elk Park; son, Greg Johnson (Carol) of Elizabethton, TN; daughter, Stephanie Barnett (Chris) of Roan Mountain, TN; grandchildren:  Nicholas Johnson, Haley Johnson and Mercedes Barnett; brother, Charles (Chub) Johnson and wife, Iris, of Roan Mountain; sisters-in-law: Pauline Vance of Morganton and Brenda Blackwell and husband, Bobby, of Roan Mountain; brothers-in-law: Ray Norman of Elk Park and Tommy Norman and wife, Marie, of Elk Park.  Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Funeral services will will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 22nd at Belview Baptist Church. Pastor Mike Ricker and Rev. Gary Greene will officiate.  Burial will follow in the Banner Cemetery in Elk Park.  The family will receive friends from 12 noon until 1 p.m. prior to the service at the church.  Pallbearers will be: Nicholas Johnson, Brian Johnson, Chuck Johnson, Jamie Johnson, Chris Barnett and Allen Herbert.
