Wayne Gurley, age 81, of the Crabtree Community, went Home to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 30, 2025 at his home.
A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Wallace and Alma Gouge Gurley.
He was also preceded in death by his brothers: Frank Gurley, who was also his best friend, and Darrell Gurley.
Wayne enjoyed hunting, fishing and especially his grandchildren. He also enjoyed feeding and watching the birds, and when he was able, he loved taking care of his yard and house.
He worked many years at American Thread and Baxter Laboratories. He was also with the Newdale Fire Department for 25 years, where he retired as Assistant Chief.
He is survived by the love of his life, Norma Lee “Tootie” Gurley; son, Alex Gurley (Tammy); daughter, Penny Silver (Randy); his bonus children: Mary Jo Burleson and Buster Buchanan; grandchildren: Megan Gurley (Cory), Jan Michael Riddle (Jenn); two great-grandchildren whom he adored: Harper and Reese Riddle; and his “little sister”, Anita Buchanan (Bobby). Many cousins and friends also survive who will miss his dearly.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at a later date and will be announced.
