Bobby Gene Hensley

Bobby Gene Hensley, or Big Bob as he was known by close family and friends, was born in Yancey County on August 2nd, 1942, and went Home to be with the Lord on February 16th, 2025 at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC.

Bobby was a native of the Bald Mountain Community in Yancey County.  He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and served his country proudly.  Bobby worked as a carpenter and was a farmer for most of his life.  He found great joy in raising cattle, trout fishing, bluegrass music, guns, and having ramp dinners with his brothers and cousins on the family mountain.  Bobby loved and was proud of his family.  He also loved his dog, Bo.  Bobby especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren while telling them stories about his childhood.  Bobby loved to engage in a good conversation about politics, and he was a devoted follower of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Bobby is preceded in death by his parents, Arvle and Naomi Hensley; and brothers: James Hensley, William Hensley and Dennia (Grace) Hensley.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Hope Deyton Hensley; his son, Bobby (Tammy) Hensley, Jr.; his grandson, Nick (Crystal) Hensley; granddaughter, Morgan (Misher) Hollifield; brother, Zackie (Linda) Hensley; and sister, Reba Hensley.  Bobby also leaves behind six great-grandchildren who he adored:  Berklee, Sutton and Vander Hensley, and Jett, Kai and Roan Hollifield.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, February 24th, in the chapel of Yancey Funeral Services.  Burial will follow in the Zack Fender Cemetery in Bald Mountain.  Military honors will be conducted by the Sgt. E.L. Randolph Chapter #57 D.A.V.  The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. until prior to the services at the funeral home.
