Gwendolyn Young Shade Griffith, age 89 of Burnsville, NC, went Home to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC.
Born on February 11, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Lester and Juanita Young.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her siblings, Hubert Young, Mary Parker, Charlotte Barnett, Gaynell Griffith, Donald Young, L.D. Young, Harold Young, Sally Jo Young, Edith Young, Leah Young, and a sister of her heart, Lillian Silvers.
Gwendolyn was a loving mother, a faithful Christian woman, and a true friend. She was a lifelong resident of Yancey County, and graduated from Stevens Lee High School in Asheville, NC. She faithfully attended Griffith Chapel Church. She adored her family and lived her life in service to them. She took great pleasure in praying for her extended family and named them all, each and every one, in her prayers. She was the matriarch of the Young family, a strong role model, the glue that kept everyone close, and someone everyone loved and cherished. She will be forever remembered, always loved, and will eternally hold a special place in the hearts of her family and friends.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Ben (Rosa) Shade of Asheville, NC, Kenny Shade of Burtonsville, Maryland, Joey (Jackie) Shade of Burnsville, and Erica (Casey) Edwards of the home; six grandchildren: Reggie, Lauren, Darel, Jena, Joseph, and Brooklyn; ten great-grandchildren; and a special sister-in-law, Polly Young.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home in Burnsville, NC. The family will receive friends and loved ones one hour prior to the service for visitation. Reverend Richard Blanton and Reverend William Whiteside will be officiating. Interment will follow the service in the Griffith Chapel Church Cemetery on Lester Lane in Burnsville, NC.
The family would like to say special thanks to Dr. Jeffrey Polgar, for his kind service and compassionate care to Gwendolyn for so many years as her healthcare provider; as well as Glenda Smith from Pruitt Home Health, for tenderly and lovingly caring for Gwendolyn in her last days.
