Robert Bruce Young

Robert Bruce Young, 84, of Rice Rd. in Newdale, passed peacefully into his eternal rest on Monday, March 10, 2025 at home, surrounded by his family.

A native of Yancey County, Bruce was born on May 10, 1940 to Bealer M. and Evelyn McMahan Young. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy Brooks Young.

Bruce worked most of his life in the telecommunications industry and retired from GTE in 1993. He then worked for Young’s Heating and Air for several years as well as for himself servicing and installing HVAC systems.  He met lots of interesting people and made many dear friends all over WNC during his life’s journey and loved to reminisce every chance he got. Bruce was an active member of New Beginning Baptist Church where he served as deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years.

He is survived by his children:  daughter,  Regina Young McKinney and husband, Jerry, and son, Robert Young and wife,  Vickie, all of Burnsville,  N.C.; grandchildren:  Jared McKinney and wife,  Natalie of Inman, S.C., Kaycee Peterson and husband, Josh, and Robert “Bear” Young all of Burnsville; and great grandchildren: Abigail and Hallie Peterson and Harper and Luke McKinney;  siblings: Melba Taylor of Marion,  N.C., Richard Young and wife,  Joan of Franklin,  N.C., Rebecca Sharpe and husband,  Pete, of Marion,  N.C., Steve Young and wife, Carolyn,  of Marion,  N.C., Rachel Geouge and husband,  Wade, of Mocksville,  N.C., and Amelia Jane Smith and husband,  Larry, of Maiden,  N.C., and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be at New Beginning Baptist Church on Thursday, March 13, 2025. Visitation will begin at 2:00pm with the funeral at 3:00pm followed by interment at Strawbridge Young cemetery in Newdale. Pastor Bobby Silver and Reverend Ronnie Whitson will be officiating.

The family wishes to acknowledge the loving care they all received from Compassionate Care WNC. All of the nurses and staff and especially Tammy Bennett , went above and beyond to minister to us in any way needed. Please consider a monetary donation to them in honor of Bruce.
