Ruby Grace, age 96, of Pigeon Roost, went to her Heavenly Home on Monday, March 10th, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. A native of Yancey county, she was a daughter of the late Lester Cornelius and Ruby Ann Edwards Laws. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 53 years, Fred Sturgill; infant son, Frederick James Sturgill; two great-grandchildren: Chase Bennett and Baby Boy Theodorides; five brothers: Leroy, Homer, Reece, Mack and Harold Laws; two sisters: Bonnie McCurry and Lena Robinson; and two sons-in-law: Terral Callahan and Michael Theodorides.
Ruby Grace was a Godly woman and a lifelong member of the Brethren Church of Pigeon Roost. She loved to quilt, and also sewed for many years for Blue Ridge Hearthside Craft Company. She was not afraid of work. She had a green thumb and loved flowers, and raised and sold daylilies. She also loved to sing and listening to gospel music, especially by Josh Turner and George Strait who she always said was “her man”. She enjoyed watching Gunsmoke and the movie “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou”. Her favorite meal was breakfast food, especially gravy and biscuits. Ruby Grace was a Grandma to all and will forever be known as the “Community Grandma” and the best storyteller around. She especially loved her grandkids and thought the world of them. Ruby Grace was loved by everyone and her memory will be carried in the hearts of all who knew her.
Left to cherish her memory are her beloved children: Susie Callahan of Bakersville, Buddy Sturgill of Pigeon Roost, Danny Sturgill (Velma) of Bakersville, and April Theodorides of Pigeon Roost; six grandchildren: Chad Bennett (Melora), Chris Callahan (Eugenia), Nicholas Sturgill (Dana), Celia Street (Nick), Athena Fick (Joseph) and Yanni Theodorides (Elizabeth); eight great-grandchildren: Zak Bennett, Samantha Street, Fate Sturgill, Carter Sturgill, Samuel Street, Michael Theodorides, Kalliope Fick, Novalee Theodorides; one brother: Lester Junior Laws (Lennie); four sisters: Kay McMahan, Jane Deyton, Evelyn Medford and Burma Robinson (Dennis); special friend, Linda Gray (Jack), as well as several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 15th in the chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. Rev. Todd Ayers and Jerry Barnett will officiate. Honorary Pastor will be Joe Brown. The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m. prior to the services at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 17th in the Bailey Hill Cemetery. Rev. Philip Garland will officiate. Pallbearers will be Yanni Theodorides, Joseph Fick, Nicholas Sturgill, Chris Callahan, Nick Street, Fate Sturgill and Chad Bennett. Honorary pallbearers will be Carter Sturgill, Samuel Street and Michael Theodorides.
