High Fire Risk

The U.S. Forest Service is warning that conditions are dry, making grass and brush fires a high risk.

Mitchell County has been battling two wildfires this week. Both blazes started Tuesday.

The Fred Sparks Road Fire is now reported as being 100% contained.

The John Sparks Road Fire is now reported as being partially contained. Firefighters from local fire departments and the Forest Service have been working to control the fire. The Forest Service is using Back burn operations in an effort to control the spread of the fire. There may still be significant amounts of smoke in the area from this fire, in the Loafer’s Glory area.

Remember that Mitchell County has a Burning Ban in place and everyone’s being ask avoid outdoor burning during this danger period.

Yesterday afternoon, a wildfire impacted traffic on I-40 around 4 p.m. It occurred on Old Fort Mountain near the Buncombe County line.

The U.S. Forest Service confirmed that a car caught fire, then caught on the dry grass on the side of the road and then spread up into the woods, leading to the wildfire.
