The Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office has reported that the rabies test on the first possible rabid raccoon has come back negative. In late March, Mitchell County Lt. Ashley Beam responded to the first possible rabid raccoon case of the season for the county. Since then, the sheriff’s department has responded to close to 10 other suspiciously acting raccoons. They have taken them to the health department to be sent off for testing. If the others are negative, they will start only testing if there is human or domestic animal contact. The sheriff’s department will continue to keep the public informed about any possible rabies cases.
