Christopher “Scott” Cooper

Christopher “Scott” Cooper, age 53, of the Pensacola Community, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 29 th , 2025, with his loving wife of 19 years by his side.

He was a dedicated husband, father, son and friend.

A native of Yancey County, he was the son of Chris and Glenda Cooper.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Angela Cooper, and son, Caden Cooper, along with aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Hal and Blondene Cooper, and maternal grandparents, Glen and Mae Stiles.

A 1989 graduate of Mountain Heritage High School, Scott attended Lees-McRae College, then North Carolina State University where he obtained an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science. He worked at Port Royal Golf and Racquet Club in Hilton Head, SC. He then worked for Hatch Incorporated and relocated to Northern Arizona, where he met his wife. While living on the Navajo reservation, he worked for Coconino County Parks and Recreation. After returning to North Carolina, he was hired by Altec as a welder.

Scott had a great admiration for the outdoors. He loved to walk in the woods for hours, foraging for ginseng and ramps. As a steward of the earth, he loved and respected Nature as it loved him back. While walking in fields or by rivers, arrowheads revealed themselves to him and wildlife greeted him. He was passionate about gardening and dry farming; each spring he planted blue corn, potatoes, pumpkin, and the three sisters (squash, corn and beans).  He thoroughly enjoyed living on the Navajo reservation and was loved and respected by the Navajo and Hopi people. He was nicknamed Scott Yazzie, as Yazzie is a common name, like Smith. His creative artistic talent was expressed through painting on canvas, photography, metal art and on walking sticks. Each piece of artwork was intricately and uniquely designed as he spent many hours perfecting it.

Scott was considerate, caring, and empathetic, always lending a helping hand. Known for his humor, he enjoyed playing pranks and cracking jokes. Even in illness, he was smiling and never complained. He loved his family more than anything, and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, April 5, 2025 at Yancey Funeral Services Chapel, in Burnsville, NC. Pastors Kent Smith and Greg Alderman will officiate.
