Staff Sergeant Jack “Benny” Hodges

Staff Sergeant Jack “Benny” Hodges US Army Retired of Bob Taylor Road, Newland passed away Sunday April 6, 2025. Born in Avery County he was a son of the late Jim and Mary Gwyn Hodges. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson Baily Shane Garland.
Benny retired from the US Army after twenty-six years of service, serving a tour in the Persian Gulf, three tours of Operation Iraq Freedom and Desert Storm. He received a bronze star in Afghanistan and was a team leader in Iraq. He later retired from the Avery/Mitchell Correctional Facility.

Since discovering YouTube on TV and his phone watching Andy Griffith and MASH was one of his favorite pastimes or you could always find him watching some kind of ballgame whether it be an old or a new game and he was an avid University of Tennessee fan.

Left to cherish his memories is his wife Brenda Woody Hodges, son, Brandon Hodges, stepdaughter, Karen Garland (Shane), stepson, Kevin McClellan, brother Bobby Gwyn (Wanda), sisters, Penny Goetz (Steve) and Marilyn McKinney, grandchildren, Lillian Pennell, Jordan McClellan, Josh McClellan (Lizzy), and Noah Garland great granddaughter, Kinsley McClellan, nephews, Travis and Christopher Crowder, niece Amanda Gwyn, step nephew, Zachary Richardson and his dog Lexie.

Funeral services for Mr. Hodges will be held at 11:00 am Monday April 14, 2025, at First Baptist Church, Newland with the Revs. Burke Jones and Justin Hodges officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment and military honors will follow at 1:00 pm at the Mountain Home National Cemetery in Johnson City, TN.
