Tax Deadline Extension for North Carolina Residents

tax1

All individuals and businesses in North Carolina now have until May 1, 2025, to file their 2024 federal and state tax returns and make any necessary tax payments. Although this extension was originally implemented due to Hurricane Helene, the additional time applies to all North Carolina residents, not just those directly affected by the storm.

The extension covers tax deadlines that would normally fall between September 25, 2024, and May 1, 2025. Taxpayers are still encouraged to file by the usual April 15 deadline if possible, but filing and payment by May 1 will not incur penalties.

In a March notice, the North Carolina Department of Revenue stated:

“The department reminds taxpayers that the due date is April 15th. However, the department will remove late action penalties assessed to a taxpayer if the taxpayer files the state income tax return and pays taxes due on or before May 1.”

If you need additional information or assistance a tax professional or contacting the IRS or NC Department of Revenue directly.
