A State of Emergency to support wildfire response efforts across 34 counties in Western North Carolina, including Avery, Madison, Mitchell, McDowell, and Yancey counties has been extended. The region is facing an exceptionally active spring wildfire season, keeping the N.C. Forest Service, emergency management staff, and first responders on high alert.

Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler said. “I appreciate the Governor extending the State of Emergency and making resources available, especially with the elevated risk of wildfires in Western North Carolina. I urge everyone to use extreme caution when doing any burning.”

Persistent dry conditions across many counties continue to fuel wildfire activity. In response, the State Emergency Response Team has maintained regular communication with the North Carolina Forest Service and local emergency management offices to ensure first responders, state forest firefighters, and rangers have the support they need to protect their communities.
