A statewide enforcement campaign aimed at reminding drivers to obey North Carolina’s Move Over law began today, May 12, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT).

The Move Over law requires motorists to either change lanes or slow down when approaching emergency vehicles stopped on the roadside with flashing blue, red, or amber lights. The goal is to protect law enforcement officers, emergency workers, and other roadside crews from potential danger.

The weeklong campaign, which runs through May 18, is being led by the N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program (GHSP) in coordination with state and local law enforcement agencies.

“Our emergency transportation and utility responders put themselves in harm’s way each day to keep our roads safe,” GHSP Director Mark Ezzell said in a statement. “The Move Over law is not just a suggestion — it’s the law. This campaign is a crucial effort to educate drivers and build a culture of safety on North Carolina’s roads.”

Violating the Move Over law can result in fines and court costs, and more serious consequences if a crash or injury occurs.
