A major $48 million investment through the Completing Access to Broadband program, aimed at expanding high-speed internet to over 14,000 households and businesses across 22 North Carolina counties, has been announced. Mitchell County is among the key beneficiaries of this initiative.
In Mitchell County, 84 homes and businesses will soon gain access to high-speed internet, thanks to a partnership with Zito Media. This expansion is part of a broader effort to bridge the digital divide in rural communities across the state.
“This investment is about connecting all North Carolinians, especially in our rural areas, to greater opportunities,” said Governor Stein. “Access to reliable internet is no longer a luxury — it’s a necessity.”
The initiative is backed by over $14 million from broadband providers and more than $33 million from the federal American Rescue Plan, with funding awarded by the North Carolina Department of Information Technology.
Other Western North Carolina counties also slated for improvements include Burke and Wilkes.
