This Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Thornton Wilder, tells the story of ordinary life in the small New Hampshire town of Grover’s Corners. Through the lives of two families, the Webbs and the Gibbs, the play explores the cyclical nature of life, love, marriage, and death. It highlights the importance of appreciating the simple moments and the people around us, reminding us that true connection and wonder often reside in the everyday.
This production heavily features the Burnsville community, and its themes lean into the Hurricane Helene recovery effort here in Yancey County. Director Erika Tyner designed the set to be completely built out of pallets used to transport supplies to residents, and the show mirrors the situation here in Burnsville immediately following the storm, as residents came together to work towards recovery.
The play is a timeless exploration of the human experience, prompting audiences to reflect on their own lives and relationships. With its minimalist staging and the unique Stage Manager character, Our Town creates a powerful and intimate experience, urging viewers to embrace the beauty and fragility of existence. It’s a poignant reminder that life, with all its joys and sorrows, is a precious gift, and we should cherish every moment.
