A picture is worth 1,000 words…
here are a few to provide a glimpse at our recovery process. We can’t tell you how many tons of mud and muck were removed from our gardens, all we know is that it was A LOT! It will take years to rebuild our park, town, and region. Each day we take another step in the right direction. Our goal is for MGG to be a bright spot of beauty and abundance that will uplift and inspire our community this summer.
Thank you to everyone who has contributed to our recovery. We couldn’t have done this without you!
New growth…
We are thrilled to report that our garden is growing again. After several months of hard work, new life is sprouting in the garden. The old saying, “it takes a village…” could not be more true. Many machines, shovels, and strong backs have made our recovery possible. We mucked out our beds with the help of the TRACTOR Farmer Task Force, we have a small group of regular volunteers who we can always count on to show up and do what needs to be done, and a new partnership with NC Youth Service Corps has helped our progress in the last few weeks.
We are so excited to welcome you back into the garden this summer.
Our current volunteer schedule is: Mondays, 4:00 – 5:30 pm
Thursdays, 3:00 – 4:30 pm
Can’t make it during those times? We are always looking for folks to help water on off days, (this is especially needed as we move into the warmer months). Send me an email if you are interested, or stop by during one of our volunteer hours.
In the meantime, we want to hear from you! Please take a moment to fill out our community survey. We would love your input and feedback on what types of events, workshops, and gatherings you would like to see in the garden.
We are hiring an Operations Assistant to join our team! We are looking for a motivated individual to steward our values and mission and to support our community food programming. The position is part-time (10 – 20 hours per week depending on seasonal needs), with a flexible schedule, and requires some evening and weekend availability. If you’re interested, we want to hear from you! A job description is HERE.
Coming soon! Our harvest table fresh food markets will return in June. We are looking for volunteers to help out at these events. Plan to arrive between 3:00 – 3:30 PM to help us set up and distribute food to the community.
Our recovery and rebuilding efforts are going to take many years. We know there is tremendous need throughout the entire county and region. If you are in a position to support our ongoing efforts to build a resilient local food system and provide direct relief to residents in Mitchell County, please consider making a tax-deductible donation at www.mitchellgivinggardens.com
