James Hughes, age 85, of Henson Creek Road in the Spear Community, went Home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 22nd, 2025, at The Greens at Spruce Pine, NC. Jim was born on February 1st, 1940, the third of ten children to the late John and Nola Hughes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his spouse, Coleen Singleton; brothers, Ted and Butch Hughes; and sisters, Euna Bentley and Carolyn Holtsclaw.
Jim was retired from Unimin Corporation. Prior to his declining health, he enjoyed fishing, farming, tinkering in his garage, loafering, and, later on, sitting on his porch bird watching.
Left to cherish his memory are his children: Rick Singleton (Laura), Amy Street, Penny Bowman, Kenny Hughes (Carla), Pam McMahan (Kurt), and Junior Hughes (Trish). He is also survived by eight grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and siblings: Helen Dellinger, Margie Hughes, Ruby Wise, Brenda Trivette, and Doug Hughes.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, June 26th at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. Pastor Darrin Waldroup will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of The Greens at Spruce Pine for their wonderful care of Jim during his stay, and to Hospice and Palliative Care of the Blue Ridge. They all went above and beyond with excellent care.
