
Nearly a dozen homes were damaged, multiple vehicles destroyed, and one person injured after powerful thunderstorms swept through McDowell County on Wednesday afternoon, June 25th, according to McDowell County Emergency Management officials.
Preliminary assessments from the June 25 storm event revealed that 11 homes suffered damage from falling trees. One person was injured when a tree struck a vehicle on Burma Road.
The most significant damage was reported in a concentrated area stretching from Stacy Hill Road to Deacon Drive, including Burma Road East and Paradise Circle in the Nebo community. Additional, more isolated damage was documented in Glenwood, Sugar Hill, Old Fort, and Hankins.
A structure fire also broke out in the Dysartsville community during the storm. Nine fire departments responded to contain the blaze. Investigators believe lightning may have sparked the fire.
Emergency officials believe lightning was the cause.
