Donald “Don” Eugene “Gene” Wright

Donald “Don” Eugene “Gene” Wright, age 78, of Bakersville, passed peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, June 29, 2025 at his home.  A native of Buncombe County, he was one of nine children of the late Fred and Etta Turner Wright.  He was also preceded in death by two sons:  Brad Mitchell Wright and Vincent David Johnson; and siblings: Betty Anderson, Junior Wright, Kathy Wright, Ruby White, Terrill Wright, Fred Edward “Brother” Wright and Carolyn Phillips.

One of Donald’s greatest passions in life was his work as a truck driver.  He took immense pride in his job and was well known for his truck’s gleaming lights and chrome.  Over the years, he drove for several companies, but before retiring, he fulfilled a longtime dream by owning his own rig under the name “Don’s Trucking”.  On the CB, he was affectionately known by his handle, “Bojangles”.  When he wasn’t on the road, Don found joy in tending to his flowers and never hesitated to lend a hand with housework.  Above all, though, his greatest love was for his family, who meant more to him than anything else in the world.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 51 years, Sylvia Hughes Wright; children:  Steven Wright (Mary) of Marion, Donna Wright Cassidy (Charles Pike) of Cochran, Georgia, Melissa “Missy” Wright (Jason) of Lenoir, Chad “T-Bone” Wright of Pigeon Roost and Cleta Johnson Bennett (Faron) of Lenoir; sister, Brenda Russell of Asheville; grandchildren: Megan Simmons, Kevin Branch, Sheyleigh Wright, Isaac Wright, Braxton Wright, Nicole Pierce and Lucas Johnson; and great-grandchildren: Maddox Simmons, Lincoln Simmons, Perry Pierce, Bradley Pierce and Harmony Johnson.   Several nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family also survive.

Per his wishes, no services are planned at this time.  Memorial donations may be made to the family directly or by visiting our website at www.yanceyfuneralservice.com and looking under the Tribute Wall on his obituary.
