The Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy (SAHC) has announced the purchase of the 92-acre Waterfalls Park property in Newland.
Known for its wooded trails, mountain views, and multiple waterfalls, Waterfalls Park has long been a favorite for locals and visitors seeking a peaceful retreat. For years, former owner Thelma McLean generously allowed the public to explore and enjoy the land. Now, with SAHC’s purchase, that legacy of public access will continue.
Although the site sustained damage from Hurricane Helene — including the loss of picnic tables — SAHC is actively pursuing grant funding to restore and improve the park. Planned upgrades will focus on safety and enhancing the visitor experience while preserving the natural beauty of the area.
This latest conservation effort is part of SAHC’s ongoing mission to protect the unique landscapes and natural resources of the Southern Appalachians for generations to come.
