Mayland Community College is now accepting applications for its new Medical Lab Technician (MLT) Associate Degree program, beginning Fall 2025. The program offers a unique path into the healthcare field for students who enjoy science and want to make a difference—without the demands of daily patient interaction.
Students in the MLT program will learn to perform vital diagnostic tests on blood, tissue, and body fluids that help doctors detect and treat disease. While occasional patient interaction may occur during training, most graduates go on to work in behind-the-scenes laboratory roles that support healthcare teams without being on the frontlines.
“Medical Lab Technicians are a critical part of modern healthcare, and many people don’t realize these opportunities exist,” said Kim Ledford, dean of health sciences. “If you’re someone who thrives in structured, science-based environments and wants to help others without working at the bedside every day, this is the kind of program you’ve been waiting for.”
The five-semester program combines online instruction with in-person lab training in areas such as microbiology, hematology, and clinical chemistry. Graduates will earn an Associate of Applied Science degree and be eligible to sit for national certification exams.
Shelly Luckadoo, the program’s lead instructor, brings years of real-world experience in medical laboratory science. “This program is designed to mirror the demands and expectations of today’s clinical labs,” Luckadoo said. “Students will be using real equipment and developing the hands-on skills they need from day one.”
Dr. Keegan Anderson, vice president of instruction, sees the program as part of Mayland’s broader mission to connect students with careers that serve the region. “This isn’t just a new program—it’s a meaningful opportunity to meet workforce needs while helping students discover new possibilities in healthcare,” he said.
According to North Carolina labor data, the average salary for medical lab technicians is $47,000, with steady demand expected over the next decade. Graduates can pursue careers in hospitals, diagnostic labs, research centers, physician offices, and biotech companies.
Enrollment is now open for Fall 2025. Space is limited.
